Privateers of Utopia

The Art of Improving the World

(Heiner Müller) With the exhibition "Privateers of Utopia," the Weserburg is presenting thought-provoking impulses by artists with regard to the possibility of changing the world and society. The worldwide economic crisis has vividly demonstrated how dangerous it is when politics places the structuring of society in the hands of the economy. But what is the role of art in this context? What possibilities does it have for exercising an influence? "Art doesn't liberate us from anything"—Bruce Nauman's sober assessment focuses in a special manner on the seeming impotence of art vis-à-vis the supposedly more powerful forces of politics and the economy. On the other hand, Carsten Ahrens, the director of the Weserburg, formulates the thematic core of the exhibition differently: "It is the arts—the visual arts, theater, literature, film, dance and music—which keep awake as a living dream the vision of another world." Color in Flux

Exhibition on the Occasion of the 20th Anniversary of the Weserburg
The exhibition on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the Weserburg explores how artists since Jackson Pollock have dealt with free-flowing paint. Works by the most important representatives of Abstract Expressionism and Color Field Painting will be compared with works by younger artists. Highlighting the exhibition will be new works developed in situ by Katharina Grosse, K.H. Hödicke, Peter Zimmermann, Nicolás Uriburu, Rainer Splitt, and others.

In the late 1940s, the American painter Jackson Pollock ventured a simple and at the same time seminal experiment: he laid a canvas on the floor of his studio and began applying paint to it from above. Bent forward and making movements that incorporated his entire body, he poured and dripped acrylic and ordinary paint across the painting surface. This technique, which came to be known as Action Painting, subsequently inspired entire generations of artists. One began to understand color as a flowing material with specific physical features and to use it artistically. This was consciously done counter to well-rehearsed visual habits and as a new challenge to the senses and the mind.[more...]

The Swiss artist Zilla Leutenegger (*1968 in Zurich) combines murals, drawings, objects, and video projections to produce space-consuming installations and light images. Their playful ease takes us by surprise. Several sweeping but succinctly placed lines are often enough for the artist to create her own world. We time and again encounter Leutenegger’s alter ego, the fictional character Zilla, in vaguely suggested spaces. She is the sole protagonist with whom she explores different role patterns and identities. Childhood dreams and the fantastical likewise have a place here, as do completely everyday situations: Zilla playing the piano, working, or just reading a book. It is precisely ostensibly commonplace activities that through the eyes of the artist become perceptual occurrences of a special kind; that are in a position to point beyond the here and now and in doing so shift us into a state of aesthetic experience. Between Spaces
Horizontal lines and structures dominate the abstract paintings by the American painter Mark Harrington. In an elaborate process, he uses various tools to draw tangible traces into the layers of the impasto, still wet acrylic paint. By doing so, his works becomes “readable” in the sense of lines that have been “inscribed,” as it were, into them. Harrington stresses the fact that he and his paintings have a direct relationship to jazz. And by the same token, his works inspire jazz pianist Michael Wollny and vibraphonist Christopher Dell to create new sounds. All three artists even speak of the synergies and affinities in their work. And all three are on equally intimate terms with the collector and music producer Siggi Loch.[more...]

BERTENBURG

Paintings
At first glance, Achim Bertenburg’s paintings look like monochrome surfaces with mist- or streak-like structures. Yet if one examines them more intensely, one believes to discover suggestions of forms, shadows, or, in the colored mist, fleeting glances of objects or even landscapes in their painterly texture. Yet this impression never becomes certainty, as what prove to be the actual motifs of and motivation behind these paintings are ultimately the brush ductus and the overlying, blending, ambiguous color constructs. Ausstellung und Verleihung des Kunstpreises des HfK-Freundeskreises
Für junge Künstlerinnen und Künstler der Hochschule für Künste Bremen ist die gemeinsame Meisterschüler-Ausstellung krönender Abschluss ihres Studiums und Aufbruch zu neuen Ufern zugleich. Auch in diesem Jahr beenden sieben Meisterschülerinnen ihr Kunst-Studium in Bremen mit einer gemeinsamen Ausstellung. Es sind Bomee An, Imke Bullerkist, Guiyoung Gelhaus, Dorota Grund, Silke Parras, Milena Tsochkova und Noriko Yamamoto aus den Klassen von Professor Stephan Baumkötter, Professor Peter W. Kapier Papier | Eine Reise durch das Land des Papiers

Eine Mitmachausstellung des kek-Kindermuseums in Kooperation mit der Weserburg
Die Ausstellung "Kapier Papier" beschäftigt sich mit der Geschichte und Herstellung des Papiers und den vielfältigen Aspekten von Papier als Kulturträger: Die Besucher lernen die Vorläufer des Papiers kennen und probieren, wie es ist, auf Stein, Pergament oder Tontafeln zu schreiben. An einer Mitmachstation lernen sie, wann das Klopapier erfunden wurde oder wie viel Papier jeder Mensch in Bremen braucht. Ein Spiel mit Redewendungen verrät, woher die Redewendung „mit sich hadern“ kommt oder was der Begriff „Papiertiger“ bedeutet. An weiteren Werkstationen können die Besucher selber Papier schöpfen, verschiedene Rohstoffe zur Papierherstellung kennen lernen sowie die Notwendigkeit des Papiers im Alltag erleben. [more...]

Für die Ausstellung „in sity | an ort und stelle“ haben sich die Studierenden der School of Architecture der Hochschule Bremen von den Ausstellungen „Noch Fragen“ von Olaf Metzel und „Double Rotation“ (Sammlung Lafrenz) inspirieren lassen. Das Konzept des Semesters war es, Kunstwerke aus der Weserburg als Ausgangspunkt für ein eigenes künstlerisches und architektonisches Arbeiten zu nehmen, um daraus erste eigene Räumlichkeiten zu entwickeln. Works from the Lafrenz Collection
The Lafrenz Collection has substantially influenced the self-concept and image of the Weserburg, the collector’s museum in the middle of the river Weser, since its inception. As early as the 1970s, the Hamburg-based pharmacist Dr. Klaus Lafrenz had assembled a powerful and unmistakable collection of key positions in Minimal Art, Conceptual Art, Arte Povera, and related art trends from the United States and Europe. What particularly stands out is their questioning of the media and materials as well as of the basic conditions of the artist’s perception of these. Indeed, most of Lafrenz’s paintings, sculptures, and installations do not represent anything in a mimetic sense, do not depict anything that might exist outside of themselves. Instead, they create in a sensorial way unmistakable situations and confrontations that are immediately transferred into the space and ultimately to the viewer as well. [more...]

POETRY GOES ART & vice versa

The Emergence and International Development of Concrete and Visual Poetry from the 1950s Onwards
Working with language as a material unites artists from Latin America to Eastern Europe and from North America to Asia. As the first global literary and art movement based on aesthetic principles, concrete and visual poetry is about artists crossing the boundaries between text, image and music. The period from the 1950s onwards saw the formation of this artistic and literary trend in which, instead of merely “describing” things, the language, as a material, is self-sufficient. Here the public is confronted with the play of words and letters, the interrelationships between sound and form. One-word poems, ideograms, dialect poems, collages and objects based on writing are only some of the forms that have been created in this context.[more...]

From Page to Space

The exhibition From Page To Space is an unusual journey into contemporary art. A selection of more than 90 artists of various art tendencies – Constructivism, Pop Art, Conceptual Art, Nouveau Réalisme, Fluxus, Visual Poetry – explores, in an unexpected and surprising way, the richness of sculpture. All the works, from fixed objects to works to be cut out and mounted, have in common the fact that they are three dimensional and have been published, – either independently or in books, ranging from the late 1950s to now. Isolde Loock

the dream never thinks of itself
For her works, Isolde Loock uses glossy Jil Sander brochures, wallpaper pattern books, X-rays, art catalogues, windows and mirrors, newspapers and literary periodicals such as Lettre International. To be more precise, she adds written inscriptions to them, and to be still more precise, she combines them with literary texts written by herself or by other authors, for example Arthur Rimbaud. The works, inscribed or stamped by hand, are based on found materials, for in Isolde Loock’s view the world is full of works and objects and there is no need to add anything more. Instead of inventing something new, she re-creates existing things. She gets to the bottom of the things, for instance the fashion brochures, and brings what many people dream of or long for – but cannot attain – back to the plane of normality: combining the portrayed objects with the texts strips them of their magic, as it were. She unmasks the illusory world of advertising, which plays with people’s dreams. [more...]

Edgardo-Antonio Vigo

Conceptualism, Visual Poetry and Mail Art characterize the comprehensive oeuvre of the Argentinean artist Edgardo-Antonio Vigo (1928-1997). In the context of the military dictatorship in Argentina, his art constituted a political gesture. Through his rubber stamps, artists’ postage stamps, text works and his statements, which participated in a network of international artistic exchanges, he called attention to the situation in his native land as well as to the fate of his son – who “disappeared” in 1976 – and of the thousands of other victims of the military dictatorship. Stickers in Art

From Mail Art stickers to Street Art to the Sticker Award
The sticker, a medium that has become increasingly popular during the last few years, is the subject of an exhibition organized by the Research Centre for Artists’ Publications in collaboration with the International Sticker Awards. Alongside stickers by visual artists from the Research Centre’s collection, the exhibition features works of protest and participation culture over several decades as well as stickers representing contemporary positions in art and in everyday life from the collection of the International Sticker Awards.
