Fünfmeterweiter

Film, multimedia, sounds, live performance, and a generic project on the Spring of Art 2009
Fünfmeterweiter is CUTone Network Bremen’s most recent work. The exhibition will open with an artistic film documentation of Bremen’s Spring of Art 2009. The generic project will commence following the premiere on November 19 at 7:00 p.m.: a space-consuming installation with several monitors presents the original film material in a surprising flux of constantly new images and sounds. Thus state-of-the-art technological means enables the creation of a new form of artistic presentation.[more...]

Norman White

we fix toasters | Preisträger des d.velop digital art award [ddaa] 2008
You are suddenly spoken to by a work of art in the exhibition space: “Excuse me . . . have you got a moment?” A friendly introduction, but you first have to accept the fact that an abstract wooden sculpture on an iron stand is talking to you. “Could you turn me just a bit to the right?” the work continues. You now notice the four handles on the wood and the movable lower part of the sculpture. You can turn it around its own axis. Why shouldn’t you want to respond? You move the upper part in the requested direction. “No! Not that way. The other way!” the work barks, although you did precisely what you were asked to do.[more...] The exhibition catalog is published. [to the Shop]

Stadtgeschichten/ Ich-Geschichten

Who killed the Painting?

Works from the Block Collection
René Block has left his unique and vivid imprint on the art scene of the last few decades. His collection, with works by Joseph Beuys, Nam June Paik, George Brecht, Wolf Vostell, Arthur Køpcke and others, numbers among those with the most international significance in the area of Fluxus. And yet the committed curator, gallerist, publisher, collector and honorary professor at the Hochschule für Künste in Bremen has always, ever since the nineteen-sixties, moved deliberately beyond established norms and outside narrow borders. What interests him are not the well-known names already absorbed by the art market, but instead the artistic movements and meaningful contexts located on the fringes. Thus Block has demonstrated a talent, for more than four decades now, for discovering and supporting early on those artists who work outside the mainstream at a high level of excellence. The fact that he has remained true to this maxim and continues to seek close contact and intensive collaboration with artists is also reflected in his collection and renders it utterly distinctive.[more...] The exhibition catalog is published. A.R. Penck

Deutschland
Sixty years of the Constitution, twenty years since the Fall of the Wall and reunification. In 2009/10, we in Germany are commemorating a number of historical events which have decisively defined the development of our country. This has prompted the Weserburg, Bremen’s museum of modern art, to introduce a two-part series of exhibitions that focus on the subject of Germany. It starts with the exhibition A.R. Penck—Deutschland (A.R. Penck—Germany), followed by Freibeuter der Utopie (Buccaneers of Utopia) next year. [more...] The exhibition catalog is published. [to the Shop]

Urban Art

Works from the Reinking Collection
Urban Art is everywhere. Unsolicited, it leaves its traces and signs in urban space. It conquers the public sphere with stickers, posters, extensive murals, and stencil graffiti. It’s galleries are the world’s streets. What began as graffiti in the large cities on America’s east coast forty years ago has since experienced a decisive development. Even if the majority of actions continue to be produced anonymously and illegally, it is no longer exclusively a phenomenon associated with youth culture. Many of the protagonists have emancipated themselves from the pictorial language of graffiti writing and experimented with new forms of expression. With their subtle and humorous, occasionally offensive interventions in the urban landscape they attempt to force open familiar visual habits. As a rule, they are not concerned with damaging the urban infrastructure but with participating in a dialogue with the public.[more...] The exhibition catalog is published. [to the Shop]

FORT | POINT GRAY

[more...]

Noble Gäste

The Weserburg Hosts the Kunsthalle Bremen
In the spirit of genuine hospitality, welcoming someone into one’s home means not only accommodating him or her, the proverbial “dedication” of separate space, but also active exchange—dialogue and correspondence, as behooves an attentive host. On this premise, the selection of outstanding works that the Kunsthalle is sending to the collector’s museum Weserburg—a former warehouse in the middle of the Weser River—for two years is automatically placed in relationship to the Weserburg’s existing works from the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. This also applies for the building, a former coffee roasting facility, and its labyrinthine spaces. It is about hospitality of a special kind—not side by side and in unison, but questions and answers, dialogues, replies, and boundaries.[more...]

Hanne Darboven

Artists' Books
The exhibition at the Research Centre for Artists’ Publications pays homage to an artist who died in March of this year. Hanne Darboven is considered one of the most prominent Concept artists of the present. She drew international attention with her “writing-drawings”, which are based on the writing out of numbers as well as numerical operations, interspersed with rhythmical lines and deletions. The exhibition provides an overview of the artist’s books bounded in one-volume as well as artist’s newspapers and records. In addition to her exploration of the subject of time, the publications 'Schreibzeit, 1975-1981', 'Kulturgeschichte 1980-1983' und 'Bismarckzeit, 1978' also reveal Darboven’s preoccupation with current events as well as German history and politics.[more...]

Pro musica nova

A Radiofestival and the Spirit of Fluxus
The “Pro musica nova” was one of the leading festivals worldwide in the area of twentieth-century new music. Its interdisciplinary conception called for the involvement of both literary work and the avant-garde art of the time. Until 2000, the radio festival founded in 1961 by Hans Otte – senior head of the deparment of music at Radio Bremen at the time – offered a great number of artists working in a wide range of media a forum for extremely productive exchange.[more...]

Joan Rabascall

Production 1964-1982
Mass media, the role of woman. Militarization, violence, the “American way of life”, the recreation culture and computerization – these are Joan Rabascall’s main themes. The Study Centre for Artists’ Publications is now showing more than 150 hitherto little-known productions by the Spanish artist. The works on view date from the 1960s to the 1980s, which can be regarded the key period of his oeuvre. In an era in which most American artists submitted to the fascination of industrial production, Rabascall undertook to criticize the modern consumption culture, an approach he shared with many of his European colleagues. Within this context, he was interested above all in the increasing dominance of the media. The exhibition “Joan Rabascall: Produktion 1964–1982” inquires into the visual image and its transmission.[more...]

Emmett Williams

Emmett Williams - his name stands as much for versatility as it does for significant milestones of art history. His numerous cooperations and artist friendships brought forth many groundbreaking ideas and works: with George Maciunas, Nam June Paik and John Cage, Williams was one of the co-founders of the Fluxus movement and participated in Maciunas's legendary initial Fluxus happening in Wiesbaden. From 1957 to 1959 he worked with the Swiss artist Daniel Spoerri in the Darmstadt Kreis für konkrete Poesie (concrete poetry circle). He cultivated productive contacts with Robert Filliou, Dieter Roth, Richard Hamilton, John Cage, Claes Oldenburg, Charles Bukowski, Alison Knowles, Allan Kaprow, Joseph Beuys and others. [more...]

Franz Mon 1951 · plus

Schrift · Bild · Stimme

Anna Banana

Networking Publications
"Doctor" Anna Freud Banana - that's what one of the most popular artists of the world-wide mail-art scene calls herself, an artist whose postage stamps, prints, artist's books and magazines as well as postcard editions will soon be on view in an exhibition presented by the Study Centre for Artists' Publications. The title this Canadian artist has given herself says it all: Since the 1970s, she has concerned herself with the "scholarly" investigation of artistic issues, and her preferred action medium for doing so is: the banana.[more...]

Artists' Publications from GDR
They had a lot of staying power, the artists in the former German Democratic Republic (GDR). In Samizdat and the socio-cultural underground, they produced works which conveyed a very particular aesthetic while at the same time participating in international art currents of the time. The exhibition will present an overview of approximately twenty different original graphic magazines and numerous books which, seen from the international perspective, represent an anomaly in the development of the art of the GDR. The artists of that country were internationally networked by way of Mail Art as well as a lively video and performance milieu. Contact with colleagues in other countries of the Eastern bloc, Latin America, Western Germany and "the West" in general was also established by way of various graphic arts biennials.[more...]

"Mauer/Bremen" (Wall/Bremen) is a new element - conceived specifically for Bremen - of the multimedia project "Postcapital Archive 1989-2001" by Spanish artist Daniel García Andújar. Miroslav Klivar

Poetry as event or texts as images – for Miroslav Klivar, visual poetry is one of the most important forms of artistic expression. Photographs, prints, artists’ books, performances, videos and installations are the preferred media of this artist, a native of Prague who was already using the computer for his work as early as 1966. His Body Art activities began in 1972 in protest against the occupation of what was then still Czechoslovakia by the army of the USSR. Klivar’s first installations date from 1974. The various shapes and forms taken by his Body Art and performances have continued to develop to this day in his videos, and are seen in such works as Video Poetry of 1977 and Video Stamp Art of 1989. From 1976 onward, with DIM Art, Miroslav Klivar also concerned himself artistically with the censorial blackening of photographs during Communism – a method of making people unrecognizable on these photos for political reasons.[more...]
