Miroslav Klivar

Poetry as event or texts as images – for Miroslav Klivar, visual poetry is one of the most important forms of artistic expression. Photographs, prints, artists’ books, performances, videos and installations are the preferred media of this artist, a native of Prague who was already using the computer for his work as early as 1966. His Body Art activities began in 1972 in protest against the occupation of what was then still Czechoslovakia by the army of the USSR. Klivar’s first installations date from 1974. The various shapes and forms taken by his Body Art and performances have continued to develop to this day in his videos, and are seen in such works as Video Poetry of 1977 and Video Stamp Art of 1989. From 1976 onward, with DIM Art, Miroslav Klivar also concerned himself artistically with the censorial blackening of photographs during Communism – a method of making people unrecognizable on these photos for political reasons.

Miroslav Klivar, Visual Poetry

The exhibition provides an overview of Miroslav Klivar’s published artworks, ranging from Mail Art to Visual Poetry and even Body Art. A selection of works since the 1970s sheds light on his artistic development and the interplay of the various genres within his oeuvre.

Miroslav Klivar, born in 1932, is one of most important contemporary Czech artists. Since 1960 several Solo and Group exhibitions have shown his creative works and he received several awards. Currently he works as a professor at the World Distributed University in Brussels.

The exhibition series “Auf der Galerie / On the Gallery”

The “MIROSLAV KLIVAR” show is the seventh in the series entitled “Auf der Galerie / On the Gallery” presented by the Studienzentrum für Künstlerpublikationen (Research Centre for Artists’ Publications). By means of this programme, regular insights are provided into the Studienzentrum collection in relatively brief cabinet exhibitions on the third upper floor of the museum. In the small area forming this “cabinet”, attention can be directed toward – and emphasis placed on – work complexes otherwise rarely exhibited to the public. In each show, artists’ books and magazines, photographs, multiples, objects, films and works using many other materials grant an overview of special publications and the activities of individual artists. The exhibitions are organized in cooperation with the University of Bremen. Within this framework, students from the departments of art theory and art education are thus given an opportunity to acquire basic praxis-oriented curatorial knowledge in an actual exhibition environment.
