Le temps emprunté
The exhibition Jan Fabre—Le temps emprunté shows works by important photographers who have immortalized the Belgian artist’s theater work in their images. It is being accompanied by numerous drawings and sketches made by Jan Fabre during the developmental phase of his choreographies and plays. Thus one can experience the path from the idea to the performance as a multilayered process.

The opening of the exhibition at the Neues Museum Weserburg Bremen will take place on May 5, 2006, at 7:00 p.m. At 11:00 a.m. the following day, the artist will be present to participate in a discussion.

Twenty years ago, Robert Mapplethorpe photographed the piece Pouvoir des folies théâtrales (1984)—a work that marked the international breakthrough for Jan Fabre as a choreographer and artist. Helmut Newton was also fascinated by Fabre’s work. The exhibition presents several photos taken by him of a choreography that plays with references to opera and classic ballet: Sections de danses (1987). Carl de Keyzer, member of the photo agency Magnum, took photos of the first two parts of the opera trilogy The Minds of Helena Troubleyn: Le verre dans la tête est fait de verre et Silent Screams, Difficult Dreams. In 2001, Maarten Van den Abeele, who not lastly became known for his photos of Pina Bausch’s dance theater, did a reportage of Je suis sang. The piece was a huge success at the international theater festival in Avignon. Of the photographs assembled here, Malou Swinnen stands out with her remarkable portrait studies. In addition, the exhibition presents the black-and-white series of the production of Le Lac des cygnes (Swan Lake, 2002) by Dirk Braeckmann, and photographs of the opera Tannhäuser (2004). Other photographers are Jean-Pierre Stoop, Jorge Molder, and Pierre Coulibeuf.

The pictures on display are not only documentations of Jan Fabre’s theater work of the last twenty-five years in the sense of conventional stage photography. The unmistakable style of the photographs makes them photographic works of art in the truest sense of the word.

Quando l'uomo principale è una donna
Quando l’uomo principale è una donna is an ode to the photograph Leap into the void by Yves Klein, in which a man is free-falling, his arms outstretched, from the canopy of a building.

Jan Fabre took the jump motif, blended it with the perpetual issue of gender, and developed it into a solo dance performance. He formulates the title as a question, What if the first man had been a woman?, and demonstrates how the world would look if matriarchy and patriarchy alternated and ultimately abolished each other. Fabre plays with the conventional clichés of roles, has his dancer dance typically male and typically female gestures, boasts both the macho as well as the diva, and superimposes everything with the scent of Italy.

The strength of the dance performance lies in its constant breaches and shifts: from man to woman, from human to animal, from straight line to circular arc, from rolling and sliding to gradual straightening up.

Quando l’uomo principale è una donna premiered in Antwerp in March 2004, after which it left for a world tour. The solo dance performance has since enjoyed triumphant success in Belgium, Austria, France, the United States, and South America.

This is Jan Fabre’s first performance in Germany since 2002.
