15th Video Art Grant-in-Aid Bremen

Exhibition of the Award Winners 2005
Two current works of video art will be shown beginning November 24 at the Teerhof of the Neues Museum Weserburg Bremen. They are the exciting product of an annual award presented in the form of a grant-in-aid by the Bremer Filmbüro to two concepts for solo and group works of video art. Artists are welcome to apply from German-speaking countries and from Bremen and Bremerhaven’s twin cities.

A moment of standstill is the focus of the work capsule suite, the title of the video installation by Claudia Kapp and Benjamin Blanke, both of whom studied at the Hochschule für Künste in Bremen. For their joint concept, they received prize money to the amount of €1,500, which they used to produce their video. The image material was recorded in Tokyo, Nagoya, and Kyoto. They asked passers-by of different ages to allow themselves to be filmed for a brief moment. The essential concepts of the work are private and public life, the value of space, spatial modesty, all the way to space asceticism.

The cheerleader performance and installation entitled play forever and one night is the work of Paul Wiersbinski, who last year won the main award with prize money of €5,000. The artist, born 1983, is still studying at the Städelschule in Frankfurt am Main in Prof. Mark Leckey’s film class. The focus of the video is the dazzlingly costumed cheerleader group Emotion-Tanz from Frankfurt, who pick up on processes of aesthetic repetition and the enumeration of actions and concepts by means of movement scores by the Irish dramatist Samuel Beckett and a text by the American author Gertrude Stein. This situation, which is based on fixed rules, will be combined with the group’s existing repertoire of movement and dance. Paul Wiersbinski’s video installation is still going through a process of development: on the exhibition’s opening night, it will present preliminary recordings of performances by the cheerleaders at the Bremen Street Festival in Bohnenstrasse and at a rehearsal in Frankfurt am Main. On Saturday afternoon, the installation will be taken down and that same evening serve as a prop for the cheerleaders’ performance in Bremen’s Schwankhalle at 8:00 p.m. The film material recorded and edited on site will be shown beginning on Sunday in the exhibition spaces of the Weserburg.

Opening and Announcement of the Award Winners 2006

The presentation of the works in the Neues Museum Weserburg was prepared by the Bremen-based video artist and curator Marikke Heinz-Hoek. The artists—Claudia Kapp, Benjamin Blanke, and Paul Wiersbinski—as well as the cheerleader group will be present at the opening on Friday, November 24, 2006, at 7:00 p.m.

In the course of the opening, the names of the award winners of this year’s competition will be announced. By request, we will also allow the press to publish the winner’s names on Saturday, November 25, 2006. We will provide you with information about how this is dealt with either directly at the press conference on November 23, 2006, at 2:30 p.m., or you can call us this same day.
