Lutz Fritsch

Page for Page—Space for Space
In Germany, Lutz Fritsch, born in 1955 in Cologne, is primarily known for his sculptures in public space; however, he is also a draftsman and photographer. In 1993, he fitted Bremen with his work Raum-Fahrt (Space Travel): he positioned a yellow steel tube on the bank of the Weser River and a second on the bow of the research vessel Polarstern (Polar Star), whose home port is Bremerhaven. In its distance, this formally concrete connection of two locations is variable and only takes place in one’s imagination, because due to the Polarstern’s inability to navigate the Weser River, the two tubes will never encounter one another. On the whole, the works by the Artist Lutz Fritsch testify to his focus on spatial relationships, which need to be changed, discovered, and created so that they can be experienced.

Visitors to the Weserburg can watch Lutz Fritsch’s films, such as EIS ZEIT RAUM (ICE TIME SPACE), which he shot during his journeys to the Antarctic,  and view his artist’s books as well as some of the book objects and sketchbooks the artist recently exhibited at the Museum Burg Wissem in Troisdorf. In his books, Fritsch presents examinations of the architectural line and architectural space in photography—facsimile illustrations of drawings and sketches that provide insight into the way he conceives of, sees, and positions lines in space.

The comprehensive catalogue published in conjunction with the exhibition in Troisdorf will also be available for purchase at the Weserburg.

On the Exhibition Series

The presentation is part of a new series of exhibitions that will be on display on the gallery of the Research Center for Artist’s Publications. Taking place on the museum’s fourth floor, these showcase exhibitions are meant to provide insight into the research center’s extensive collection on a regular basis and at short intervals. Special work complexes can be displayed and highlighted that are otherwise rarely shown. Artist’s books and magazines, photographs, multiples, objects, films, and a wide variety of other materials provide an overview of special publications and activities by various artists. The exhibitions are organized in cooperation with the University of Bremen. Within the scope of a seminar, this provides students of the fine arts and art education with the opportunity of acquiring basic curatorial knowledge hands-on.
