Chronic Fluxitis

The Bremen-based collectors Maria and Walter Schnepel are fascinated by works by artists who can be summed up under the term “Fluxus.” Their avant-garde spirit manifested itself in Europe, the United States, and Japan beginning in the 1960s. Fluxus artists refused to collaborate with museums, organized the first happenings and actions, and used all of the media available to them at the time for their subversive works of art. [more]

Edgardo-Antonio Vigo

Conceptualism, Visual Poetry and Mail Art characterize the comprehensive oeuvre of the Argentinean artist Edgardo-Antonio Vigo (1928-1997). In the context of the military dictatorship in Argentina, his art constituted a political gesture. Through his rubber stamps, artists’ postage stamps, text works and his statements, which participated in a network of international artistic exchanges, he called attention to the situation in his native land as well as to the fate of his son – who “disappeared” in 1976 – and of the thousands of other victims of the military dictatorship.  [more]

Color in Flux

The exhibition on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the Weserburg explores how artists since Jackson Pollock have dealt with free-flowing paint. Works by the most important representatives of Abstract Expressionism and Color Field Painting will be compared with works by younger artists. Highlighting the exhibition will be new works developed in situ by Katharina Grosse, K.H. Hödicke, Peter Zimmermann, Nicolás Uriburu, Rainer Splitt, and others.

In the late 1940s, the American painter Jackson Pollock ventured a simple and at the same time seminal experiment: he laid a canvas on the floor of his studio and began applying paint to it from above. Bent forward and making movements that incorporated his entire body, he poured and dripped acrylic and ordinary paint across the painting surface. This technique, which came to be known as Action Painting, subsequently inspired entire generations of artists. One began to understand color as a flowing material with specific physical features and to use it artistically. This was consciously done counter to well-rehearsed visual habits and as a new challenge to the senses and the mind. [more]

Kapier Papier | Eine Reise durch das Land des Papiers

Die Ausstellung "Kapier Papier" beschäftigt sich mit der Geschichte und Herstellung des Papiers und den vielfältigen Aspekten von Papier als Kulturträger: Die Besucher lernen die Vorläufer des Papiers kennen und probieren, wie es ist, auf Stein, Pergament oder Tontafeln zu schreiben. An einer Mitmachstation lernen sie, wann das Klopapier erfunden wurde oder wie viel Papier jeder Mensch in Bremen braucht. Ein Spiel mit Redewendungen verrät, woher die Redewendung „mit sich hadern“ kommt oder was der Begriff „Papiertiger“ bedeutet. An weiteren Werkstationen können die Besucher selber Papier schöpfen, verschiedene Rohstoffe zur Papierherstellung kennen lernen sowie die Notwendigkeit des Papiers im Alltag erleben.  [more]

Stickers in Art

The sticker, a medium that has become increasingly popular during the last few years, is the subject of an exhibition organized by the Research Centre for Artists’ Publications in collaboration with the International Sticker Awards. Alongside stickers by visual artists from the Research Centre’s collection, the exhibition features works of protest and participation culture over several decades as well as stickers representing contemporary positions in art and in everyday life from the collection of the International Sticker Awards.

Nimm teil an einem Tanzworkshop der besonderen Art.

Ausgehend von der modernen Tanztechnik werden wir uns spielerisch mit dem Material Papier beschäftigen und zu unserem Requisit machen. Im Zusammenspiel von Körper, Raum und unserem Papierrequisit begeben wir uns auf eine tänzerische Entdeckungsreise. Ich freue mich über alle großen und kleinen TänzerInnen im Alter von 6-13 Jahren, die Neugier und Spaß an der Bewegung mitbringen (tänzerische Vorkenntnisse sind nicht erforderlich). Anmeldung erbeten!

Der Preis beträgt 23€ pro TänzerIn für 6 Stunden (an zwei Tagen/ 03. und 04. Januar, 2012) Tanzerlebnis.

John Smith challenges us not to take anything we hear or say at face value, and in doing so puts the criteria of fact and fiction to the test. CIRCUS WOLS

He is one of the most prominent artists of the 20th century, yet scarcely anyone knows his name. Art history views him as the pioneer of Art Informel painting, and yet the complexity of his artistic existence defies any categorization. In 1932, just nineteen years old, he leaves Germany to have his finger on the pulse of time in Paris. He gains access to bohemian circles there but continues to be a loner. For throughout his life he struggled for an existence beyond the middle-class, and in doing so not lastly slid into the vicissitudes of the National Socialist war against European culture. [more]

This exhibition features the publications released from 1998 onwards by Roma Publications, the publishing house founded in Amsterdam by the artist Mark Manders and the graphic designer Roger Willems. In close collaboration with artists and writers, Roma Publications has produces individual and very diverse publications in editions ranging from two to 150,000 copies. Their artists’ books, artists’ magazines as well as the graphic works they release are circulated widely, as supplements in other publications or as “give aways”.  [more]

Tobias Premper - Boxenbücher

His personal notes and his unique perception of the world form the foundation of the so-called “Box Books”, the text and image publications composed of groups of lose pages realized by Tobias Premper, Berlin-based artist, writer and freelance author. These cardboard-box treasure chests are produced in signed and limited editions. Each individual box contains between 50 and 100 pages that have been partially made by hand (e.g. original drawings), collaged, stamped, glued, torn, sprayed, printed or simply copied. [more]

Rebecca Horn is one of the most prominent contemporary artists. Known worldwide for her space-consuming installations, her protean oeuvre comprises drawings, collages, performances, films, as well as objects and moving sculptures that develop a secret life of their own. Concurrent with the TANZ BREMEN festival, the Weserburg is going back to the beginnings of her creative work and is mounting an exhibition centered around her films and performances. Her early works already exhibit striking poetic force and iconographic diversity; their point of departure and source of energy is the human body, whose possibilities and limitations she explores and seeks to overcome. [more]
