I Prefer Life

Reydan Weiss Collection. Exhibition on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the founding of the Weserburg
The exhibition “I Prefer Life” brings together more than 100 pictures, sculptures and video works that investigate in a quite sensual and convincingly provocative manner issues of identity, the assignment of social roles, and also existential areas such as life and death. Highlights and previously undisplayed works from the Reydan Weiss Collection will be presented. The collector was born in Istanbul, grew up in Jordan, went to school in Jerusalem, and came to Germany as a young woman. The fact that she has access to several cultural contexts turns the exhibition into an experience that extends its perspective far past the bounds of Europe out onto the world. In addition to renowned artists such as Cindy Sherman, Nathalie Djurberg, Bettina Rheims as well as Gerhard Richter, Anselm Kiefer and Robert Longo, the exhibition presents many surprising new works, including African, Oceanic, Chinese, Japanese, Latin American and Caribbean positions.  [more]

Marikke Heinz-Hoek

Linkepoot - Books and Editions
The video- and installation artist Marikke Heinz-Hoek developed her first editions in the early 1990s using a computer. Over the following years she produced numerous other works in the same manner, in small to unlimited print runs. Her preoccupation with the northern German landscape and the confrontation with various biographies are recurring themes in her editions. The photo-edition “Stardust 6” from 2015, for instance, juxtaposes landscape drawings by the artist and original photographs of outer space, while a computer-disk-object from the 1990s deals with the life of Marilyn Monroe. [more]

Dreamaholic

Art from Finland. Miettinen Collection
Fascination Finland – With the exhibition Dreamaholic, the Weserburg is for the first time conveying insights into the contemporary art scene in Finland. The works come from the Miettinen Collection in Berlin and Helsinki. Along with established artists such as Eija-Liisa Ahtila, Jiri Geller and Robert Lucander, there are also many positions of young artists who in many cases still await discovery. All the works on display mirror the lively diversity of contemporary Finish art and demonstrate the high degree of independence with which these artists respond to international trends and participate in artistic debates. Along with sculpture and photography, the exhibition focuses on painting. The further development of Constructivist and Minimal concepts is represented along with the resumption and continuation of the figurative forms of Pop Art and postmodernism. The spectrum of the selected forms of expression extends from poetical visual inventions all the way to the homoerotic depictions of Tom of Finland.  [more]

Artist Spaces

The Weserburg is presenting new artist spaces for the fourth time in an exciting series. The artists self-confidently present their works and concepts for debate. The exhibition thereby conveys an impression of the diversity and quality of contemporary artistic production that is impressively mirrored in the collections of the Weserburg. Particularly through the differences, contradictions and encounters which thereby come to light, the artist spaces of the Weserburg react to the complexity of experiencing the world today. Several selected spaces have been conceived by the artists specially for this exhibition; their impressive on-site installations can be seen only here. [more]

24th Bremen Award for Video Art

Kenji Ouellet and Hassan Sheidaei / Farzia Fallah
The Award for Video Art has grown over the years to occupy a fixed position in the cultural landscape of Bremen. Ever since 1992 the award, issued by the Filmbüro Bremen, has consistently focused on young, advanced positions outside the mainstream which engage in exciting projects in the realm of video art and display a diversity extending from audio-visual works with linear narration all the way to space-encompassing installations. A particular characteristic: The award goes not to already existing works but to promising concepts that are realized with the help of the financial grant and have their premiere in Bremen. This year the Weserburg is presenting the award recipient Kenji Ouellet and the artist duo Hassan Sheidaei / Farzia Fallah. In addition to two new video projections being made public for the first time, the artists are expanding the exhibition with several works from various phases of their creative output. In this context, the visual power and narrative quality of two quite different positions comes to light with wide-ranging impact.  [more]

Dreamaholic. Films from Finland

film:art 76
